Civil War Welcome
Welcome to Licking County’s 150th anniversary commemoration of the Civil War
The Civil War sesquicentennial (2011-2015) provides a wonderful opportunity for our county to rediscover the many ways in which Ohioans, and Licking County residents, had a deep and lasting impact on the war, how the war transformed Licking County and how our culture is still affected today. The story of the Civil War has an impact on every community in our state, especially Licking County.
Because Licking County played such an important role in the Civil War, several businesses and organizations have united to form a committee celebrating the 150th anniversary through a series of events set to commence in January 2011 and continue through December 2011. Each month, these businesses and organizations located throughout Licking County will host various events at their location to showcase different aspects of the Civil War. These events are a compilation of art, theater, education, lecture and historic genres in an effort to appeal a multitude of patrons.
Licking County’s 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil War is a salute to those brave men, women and children who sacrificed so much to shape the country we cherish today. Licking County’s Civil War celebration not only focuses on battles, it also highlights the humanitarian side of the war. The affects seen on the home front; the instantaneous role transformation of women becoming the sole provider for their families and children witnessing the heinous results of battle in losing parents and loved ones. These stories are both tragic and triumphant and will be celebrated in tribute to these individuals. In five years, hundreds of battles were fought, thousands of lives were lost and a country was changed forever.
A collector’s booklet of Licking County’s 150th Anniversary Celebration of the Civil War has been compiled as a guide to the 2011 Civil War anniversary events. This guide is much more than a schedule of events. It contains personal historical accounts, stories, excerpts and photos from the Civil War, each painting a vivid image of what life was like on and off the battlefield.
