Dawes Arboretum Dawes Arboretum

The Dawes Arboretum is a privately funded operating foundation dedicated to education in horticulture, natural history and Arboretum history. It was founded in 1929 by Beman Dawes and his wife Bertie to "increase the love and knowledge of trees and shrubs."

The Arboretum includes over 1,700 acres of horticulture collections, gardens, natural areas and research fields. An auto tour and several walking trails provide easy access and viewing of these collections as well as a Japanese Garden; historic apple orchard; the Daweswood House Museum; and a beech-maple forest. Hours: Grounds (free): daily dawn to dusk except Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day. Daweswood House Tours (small fee): Saturday/Sunday, 3:15 p.m. Free narrated grounds tours: Saturdays, May-October, 1 p.m. Visitors Center: Monday-Saturday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; Sunday/holidays, 1-5 p.m.
