Civil War 150 “Kick-Off” Event

“Reflections on the Beginning of War”

Press Release

Many activities have been planned throughout Licking County to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of The Civil War. The Licking County Historical Society will host a “kick-off” event for the Civil War Sesquicentennial, in cooperation with the Civil War 150th Commemoration Committee and the Licking County Historical Alliance, on Sunday, April 3 at the Buckingham Meeting House, at Veterans’ Park in Newark. Prior to the program performance, music by Folk Legends of Central Ohio will begin at 1:30 PM, with the program following at 2 PM. Titled “Reflections on the Beginning of War”, the performance introduces us to area citizens’ thoughts on the beginning of this tragic war, and where the war would lead them. The event also includes a variety of Civil War items displayed in a large tent adjacent to the Buckingham Meeting House, open for your viewing from 1-4:00 PM.

Among items on display will be John Clem and other Civil War soldiers’ memorabilia; Civil War Hospital equipment; Civil War Battle flags of Licking County regiments; and many items from various Licking County Historical Alliance Members, and individual citizens.

And—in addition—the day will include a look-alike contest for those of you out there who think you resemble favorite characters from the epic movie, Gone with the Wind! Contest winners will then be presented the following week at The Midland Theater showing of “Gone with the Wind”.

This “kick off” event is FREE, and open to the public—donations encouraged.

Licking County’s Civil War Sesquicentennial Off To A Great Start

(Newark, OH): The Licking County Historical Alliance enthusiastically launched the county’s 2011 Civil War Sesquicentennial commemoration. Events began in January with the Newark Library’s “Ohio’s Role in the Civil War” exhibit and speaker Harry Watson as the first lecturer of the Winter Lecture Series at The Works. Both events drew record crowds of over 150 attendees. “We are getting a great response from Licking County residents and beyond,” said Samantha Harris, Director of Marketing at The Works. The Licking County Historical Alliance has become a leader and role model in respect to commemoration planning for numerous counties around the state of Ohio. In addition, Licking County’s efforts have received accolades from the Ohio Historical Society and Ohio Humanities Council. “Everywhere I go, the buzz is all about Licking County’s Civil War Commemoration”, said Susan Fryer, Director of the Licking County Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.  Learn more...
